In 1974 the first Leerdammer® saw the light of day. But his story actually begins much earlier. In 1914, Dutch businessman Cees Boterkooper acquired a small cheese factory in the town of Schoonrewoerd, in the municipality of Leerdam. At that time, the trader Bastiaan Baars ran a small cheese shop in the neighboring town. In 1970 their paths crossed. The two crossed paths in 1970 in search of a greater variety in the cheese range.
They decided to develop a new cheese together that would combine the mild taste of a Gouda with the large holes of an Emmental. This is how today’s Leerdammer® came about, which owes its name to the municipality of Leerdam.
